Introduction

1 Course details

The objective of the workshop is to encourage participants to explore music technology by enabling them to craft, code and play their very own wearable musical instrument.

Participants will first be shown a demonstration of the glove, as well as how to sew it. The participants will then start off by sewing their glove, as well as sewing the battery pack pouch and micro:bit pouch. They will then proceed to wire up the micro:bit to the sewable speaker with the three crocodile clips (or wires and brass split pins). Then, they will start coding their microbits, using the “input” and “music” blocks on the makecode.microbit.org website. Participants will be shown how to make a simple code (e.g., “on shake, start melody dadadum”), after which they are given creative freedom in what music or tunes their gloves wants to play with which gesture or movement. Children could also use sheet music notes to code multiple tunes or a song onto their glove. They are also encouraged to explore the different blocks and play different melodies, and then experiment with making their own tunes and sound effects using tones, beats and different gestures.

2 You will learn :

Explore basic components like the accelerometer and gyrometer on the micro:bit, which can be combined with different movements and coded with different sounds.

Learn how to make a gesture controlled musical glove from scratch, with no crafting, coding or electronics knowledge required.

Learn creative coding to code musical notes onto the gloves using simple block code.
